Downloaded guitarix. Been my dream to have a program like this. Can't get it working. What is the 'jack server'? Why do I have to connect to a server?
Tried anyway and got this: 10:01:49 system init. failed to lock memory: Cannot allocate memory 10:01:49 system init. failed to lock memory: Cannot allocate memory 10:01:55 main.
I really tried to get jack up and running, sorry. THIS MAY NOT EVEN BE THE PROBLEM!
- I have a guitar cable to USB that I am trying to use (this may be where I went wrong). I have never gotten sound through it. If I CAN use the USB I want to because, due to the orientation of my jacks, plugging into a USB port puts less physical.strain on the computer. Just managed to get this (Rakarrack and Guitarix) to work myself using an Apogee Jam guitar audio interface (guitar cable plugs into one side of the Jam and using the provided USB cable to connect the Jam. First some thoughts: Using a 'guitar cable to USB', a 6.35mm to 3.5mm adapter or one of the earlier (and cheaper) interfaces like Irig has sever limitations as it feeds the analog guitar signal into the computer, thereby picking up a lot of noise.
The later ApogeeJam, IrigHD or Line6SonicPort digitalize the signal before handing it to the computer. Do try this out in a music shop if you have an Apple device with either Garageband, JamUp, Amplitube or other apps that work with these devices. I find all analog solutions unacceptably noisy. You need to install QjackCtl, a Jack control GUI.
Then I connect my Jam, start QjackCtl and head to settings. Under 'Input Device' I select 'hw:Jam', under 'Output Device' my audio card. Some audio cards need the tick set at 'force 16bit'. Hit 'Ok' and 'Start'.
If Jack starts ok open Guitarix. I would like to add that the recommended removal of pulseaudio was in my case not necessary, however, after closing Rakarrack and stopping Jack I had to reboot to get my sound back. I then found that booting UbuntuStudio 16.04.1 as a liveUSB worked much better and with lower latency, probably due to the real-time kernel it uses.
On top of it you have a huge number of sound apps bundled, among them Guitarix, Rakarrack, Jack and QjackCtl. The results were definitely good enough to have some serious fun, all effects in stereo, of course. I agree with Flemur, Rakarrack is easier to approach then Guitarix.
Altogether I think the best solution is to create a separate partition and install a dedicated distro that uses a real-time kernel like UbuntuStudio or AVlinux. Still nothing. Installed qjackctl (swapped guitarix for rakarrack too). Changed the input to what I believe was my USB-guitar cable and changed output to my graphics card (which to my understanding is where my sound is coming from). I also tried qjack on the default settings.
Interestingly I tried getting audio from other sources. Youtube and movies I have on my hard drive. Didn't get sound on either.
In fact Youtube wouldn't even play the video. I originally tried this USB-guitar cable on a Windows platform too, and had similar issues with not getting sound from any programs when the USB-guitar was plugged in. At this point I'm definitely thinking of getting a different connecting device. If Apogee Jam is the way to go then I could do that. Sound more promising than this Chinese USB weirdness I got going on. The ApogeeJam is definitely working, even though it says nothing about linux support on their site. The more expensive ApogeeJam96k brings no advantage, at least not to my ears.
It also works nicely as an on-the-go device when plugged into ipad/iphone/ipod and using the above mentioned guitar fx apps; all necessary cables are in the box. You can then plug your head phones in your Apple device.
The only draw-back is that the device has to power the whole setup, so don't expect you battery to last too long. An ipad is preferable to iphone or ipod because of the larger screen; those apps are quiet beautifully designed but can feel a bit cramped. At this point I'm definitely thinking of getting a different connecting device. Before messing with jack and the guitar racks, I'd make sure you can get some sound into the computer and hear it! You can use a simple 1/4' to 1/8' adapter to make sure the input works, or try input to mic.
With line-in it'll be quiet (yet noisy!), with mic it'll probably be loud and distorted. But you'll be able to tell if you sound is working properly. I used to use a small (battery or adapter powered, probably cost $20-30) Roland mixer that had a trim for the input impedance and level, so you could connect anything from mic, guitar or line-level and get a good line signal out. Pretty sure this is what I got: CHINA W780 3m USB Guitar Bass Link Cable for PC Mac from GearBest Gearbest Main Features:Bit depth: 16-bit Sample rate: 44.1 KHz System Requirements: Mac OS 9 or higher - PC: Windows XP or Vista - Windows7USB Port Specification: Model W780 Type Cable Available Color Gray Interface USB 2.0 Cable Length (cm) 300cm Product Weight 0.167 kg Package W When I plug the device into Windows it is recognized. Can't get sound out of it, but then again I don't even know what program I would use on Windows.
I tested through a Google Chrome extension. When I plug it into my Linux comp (Sarah distro), I don't see it recognized anywhere. I don't care about noise or anything else at this point.

I just want to play something!! This should work and it should work without much noise since it has the mentioned Analog/Digital converter. The fact that you don't get any other sounds seems to indicate that the device is indeed recognized. Same with my ApogeeJam; as I said, I need a reboot to get my normal system settings back. Your device samples at 16bit so make sure to tick the 'Force 16bit' box at the Jack settings! I might be wrong but in my case it looks like Jack doesn't like leaving any of the 'input' or 'output' settings at 'default'. Play around with the many options in Jack and also go into your normal sound settings and check for and select any additional input devices.
Sorry that I can't be more precise but I'm only a couple of days ahead of you. Best try this with a UbuntuStudio 16.04.1 liveUSB, the latest version was released only very recently. doesn't mess with your normal sound settings - uses later versions of bundled apps (your Mint18 hasn't got the upgrade to the 16.04.1 base, I believe) - runs on a real time kernel.
